Explosive safety is one of the most important areas of activity of GRUPA WOLFF.

GRUPA WOLFF’s offer includes modern systems of safeguarding industrial plants against explosion. The presented solutions are applicable in the first place in explosion risk zones and wherever explosive dust in industry occur.

All the solutions presented below are provided with appropriate certificates of conformity with applicable ATEX directives and are properly marked.

1. EXPLOSION DAMPING

Explosion damping consists in identifying the initial explosion phase and injecting a damping agent inside the protected device. Thereby, the explosion is damped immediately upon ignition of explosive atmosphere, which prevents excessive pressure and fire from formation inside the apparatus. The time counted from detection of an explosion to explosion damping is counted thousandth part of a second (from 0.0075 to 0.0300 s).

The explosion damping system is the most universal method of protection of machines and plants against explosion effects. It is the only one that completely eliminates explosion effects and prevents fire.

2. EXPLOSION RELIEF (VENTING)

Explosion relief consists in taking out explosion effects (mainly pressure), through a venting system, outside the protected device. As a result, the pressure inside the device is reduced to a safe level.

Three basic types of relieving systems are available in the market, i.e. decompression panels, dampers with a self-closing mechanism and the so called flameless relieving systems. The latter – due to their special design – can be applied indoors. Others systems should be applied outdoors due to a direct outburst of the explosion wave to atmosphere.

Decompression panels – a simple and effective protection form intended chiefly for outdoor application. When applying panels, one must remember of demarcating of a dangerous zone within their borders; such a zone may extent to tens of metres in some cases.

Decompression panels are a simple and reliable system protecting against explosion effects. However, application of the panels is frequently restricted or impossible due to a number of limitations. Therefore, extreme caution must be exercise when choosing this solution.

Flameless explosion relief system – the unique design allows for applying the solution indoors and on densely mounted installations. The system also minimises the risk of a fire following an explosion.

Explosion relief dampers – the system is automatically closed after explosion – the lack of air access protects the device from fire. This solution is most frequently applied to coal dusts.

3. EXPLOSION DECOUPLING (ISOLATION)

The above (damping and relief) systems reduce explosion effects to a safe level, thus protecting the plant against destruction. Nevertheless, residual explosion effects in the form of a wave of fire and pressure may spread through a system of pipes, ducts and conveyor transfers to neighbouring facilities.

This phenomenon leads to generation of secondary explosions which bring about much worse effects. In extreme cases, this may lead to a complete destruction of process plants. To counteract this phenomenon – in compliance with the Polish and European law – explosion decoupling (cut-off) systems must be applied. It is aimed at closing physically the pipelines, ducts and conveyor transfers that connect the explosion-affected facility with the remaining parts of the plant.
