For 20 years, GRUPA WOLFF has been delivering a broad assortment of solutions protecting process equipment and plants against damage resulting from an uncontrolled increase or drop of pressure in the system (Bursting Discs). Safety plates are one of basic safeguards of the type. The devices perform a similar function as safety valves, except that they have to be replaced after actuation. On the other hand, safety valves are much cheaper than valves due to a simpler construction. An important thing is that safety plates can be applied both independently and in combination with a safety valve. In case of a plate-valve set, the plate function consists in protection of the valve against the corrosive impact of the operation environment and impurities. This solution allows to apply a cheaper valve with a lower material design class. The safety plates offered by GRUPA WOLFF are characterised by a complete tightness, resistance to pressure fluctuations in the system and a long failure-free operation time.

1. STANDARD DESIGN SAFETY PLATES FOR SIMPLE APPLICATIONS

Single-layer safety plates are intended mainly for simple applications and high bursting pressures. The plates have been designed so that the bursting pressure is a resultant of selection of the proper thickness and strength of the material used.

The maximum admissible operating pressure is up to 70% of the nominal bursting pressure. All safety plates are available with an integrated strengthening which resists underpressure.

2. SAFETY PLATES FOR LOW, MEDIUM AND HIGH OPERATING PRESSURES

Three-layer safety plates are applied mostly for low, medium and high operating pressures. The solutions offered can operate at the level of 80% of the plate bursting pressure. Special bursting points (Bursting Discs), incised with a laser beam, ensure a high precision of the plate action and, in combination with a sealing membrane, determine the bursting pressure. Additionally, in case of very high bursting pressures, plates with a star-shaped incision are applied, which guarantees a lack of fragmentation after action.
To achieve the highest possible precision of action, the bursting points have been made with the use of the newest laser technology. The integrated strengthening guarantees resistance to action of vacuum, irrespective of the plate dimension.
In the case of the applications where corrosion may be a problem, the element that is subject to bursting is protected by means of a sealing membrane made in a standard way of FEP/PTFE. For high bursting pressure values, the membrane may also be made of stainless steel.

3. SAFETY PLATES FOR LOW-PRESSURE TANKS

Safety plates for low-pressure tanks (P<0.5 bar) are a proven solution with a confirmed resistance to a high over- and underpressure. They are conformable with the European PED standard and have a number of international certificates, including TÜV and ASME VIII Par. 1. All this allows to avoid frequent and expensive overhauls of plates mounted in systems operating below 0.5 bar(g) (PED) and 14.5 psi(g) (ASME).

A significant feature of the plates offered is a complete resistance to the action of vacuum and to cyclic pressure changes. Options made of stainless steel and steel alloys are available.

Safety plates for low-pressure tanks are mounted between flanges without the need to apply any specific torque.

4. SAFETY PLATES FOR PRESSURE EQUIPMENT AND APPARATUS

Innovative safety plates with a patented design, created for protection of pressure apparatus, pipelines, gas cylinders, reactors, as well as various type tanks against excessive overpressure and underpressure. The pates have smooth process surfaces (without incisions, indentations and imperfections), which makes them perfect suitable for sanitary applications in food, biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries.

Due to the special production technology, a precisely specified amount of kinetic energy is necessary to open a safety plate. This solution ensures a complete opening of the plate and an immediate release of the energy excess from the system.

Safety valves for pressure equipment and apparatus guarantee operation at a pressure reaching 90% of the bursting pressure and a lack of fragmentation. A simple installation in a special head enables mounting of the system directly between flanges and does not require application of any specific torque at screwing.

5. SAFETY PLATES FOR SANITARY AND ASEPTIC APPLICATIONS

Safety plates are intended for sanitary and aseptic applications, therefore, they are a perfect solution for pharmaceutical, biotechnological and food industries. Moreover, due to their properties, they can be successfully applied for gases, vapours and liquids.

The safety plates presented have on the process side perfectly smooth, convex surfaces, without any dead spaces. Their design allows for operation with pressures reaching 98% of the bursting pressure value.

The robust construction of the plate enables its quick and easy mounting in standard type tubular connections without the necessity to verify the torque. The PTFE sealing, integrated with the plate and typical for tri-clamp type connections, can replaced in case of need, without replacing the whole plate. Optionally, the system can be equipped with a special signalling plate which indicates activation of the proper plate. The signalling plate is mounted behind the real plate and in normal conditions, it has no contact with the product. It is mounted in the same way as the proper plate.

6. BILATERAL ACTION SAFETY PLATES

Bilateral action safety plates substitute two standard plates due to their unique construction. The important thing is that the device offered can have different opening pressure values for over- and underpressure. This type of safety membrane is characterised by a lack of fragmentation after action and reliability.

Bilateral action safety plates can be applied for gases and liquids. Most frequently, they are mounted in non-pressure tanks.

7. HEADS FOR SAFETY PLATE INSTALLATION

The heads are used for trouble-free mounting of safety plates with the use of flange, welded or screwed connection. This solution provides for a high tightness of the system, a proper plate operation and a long life span. The heads can be heated or cooled (e.g. in case of the substances which can be subject to polymerisation, stick to the plate, etc.).
